Economic Impact of the Campo Kumeyaay Nation

Campo Indian Reservation - The Golden Acorn Casino is part of the vast entertainment industry that benefits San Diego and Imperial Counties; as such your patronage has a tremendous impact on the local economies. Many people do not realize how integral the casino is to the local and regional economies.Of course, Indian people pay their share of federal taxes, just as anyone else in the United States. What is often overlooked, however, is the significant contribution to the State and local taxes that comes from tribal lands; specifically, the Campo Kumeyaay Tribal Lands.

First, the 350 employees of Golden Acorn Casino generate over $264,000 dollars per year in State income tax revenue with no requirement for reinvestment by the State in the Campo Reservation community.

Second, our Travel Center generates over $338,000 in taxes per year for the State of California. Yet unlike other jurisdictions, the State has never, nor is it obligated to build roads for the Reservation.

Third, sales tax generated from our convenience store provides over $83,000 per year to the State of California.28.9% of this tax revenue is diverted to the County of San Diego with no obligation to support or contribute to the tribal economy.

In addition, over $700,000 dollars per year are contributed by the Campo Tribe to the Reservation Fire Department that provides fire protection and emergency medical services to hundreds of families and homes in the southeast quarter of San Diego County both on and off-Reservation.This fulltime paid fire protection service also helps to reduce the insurance costs of homes in the service area.

Unlike foreign or out-of-state corporations that take their earnings out of the local economy, the wages and earnings of the Tribe and employees of the Casino go primarily into the local economies of San Diego and Imperial Counties. A conservative estimate of economic turnover can easily show a six fold impact for each dollar in the economy. This means that each dollar that flows from the casino is spent and re-spent in the local economy an average of six times. With each transaction there is additional opportunity for taxation and profit, all occurring with the off-Reservation economy. The result is that $25 million dollars of Reservation generated operation purchases multiplies within the local economy, providing taxable revenues and profits to off-Reservation businesses are over $150 million dollars.

Additional tax contributions are made by the Campo Tribe. The Campo Indian Reservation is one of the largest sources of property tax in this quarter of the County. Property tax, in the form of possessory interest tax, is assessed by the County on leased tribal properties. This property tax provides hundreds of thousands of dollars to county government and our schools. [Based on 2007 assessment values]† This tax revenue is not shared by the County with the tribal government even though many governmental services are provided to all people within tribal jurisdiction.

In fact, if you look at the tribal community's contributions to the state and local economies, you can take pride that your patronage is a significant positive factor. And unlike a sporting or entertainment event at a stadium, you have the opportunity to walk out with much more that a torn ticket.
