General Council Vote on Sanitary Landfill Project

On May 27, 2010

The Campo General Council voted to rescind applicable lease agreements in order to terminate the Campo Sanitary Landfill Project. The vote occurred at a special General Council meeting resulting from a petition signed by the required number of tribal members.

The resolution to terminate the Sanitary Landfill Project won approval for several reasons:

  • A new generation of tribal members concerned about the perceived long-term environmental risks associated with the project are now eligible to vote;
  • The reality of new economic development opportunities, including options such as Kumeyaay Wind II, with fewer potential environmental risks; and
  • A belief among members that the landfill project is no longer in the best interest of the tribe.

The General Council vote regarding the landfill is an isolated event affecting a single business initiative. The vote does not reflect tribal member perception of all economic development activities.
